HP laptops with AMD Ryzen 7 3700U CPU & 15.6-inch display: Amazing value & performance with gaming skills
With Microsoft adopting the AMD Ryzen 7 3780U processor in their Surface Laptop 3 line and HP using the Ryzen 7 3700U processor in their HP Omen Gaming PC and HP ENVY x360, it says something about the line of CPU. We take a look at the HP 15 Performance Laptop featuring the Ryzen 7 3700U processor.
AMD Ryzen 7 3700U Performance
Before we delve right into the laptop, lets learn about the processor. We compare the Ryzen 7 3700U quad core processor with equivalent Intel Core i7 processors, the 10th generation Intel Core i7-10510U and the 8th generation Intel Core i7-8665U, 8565U and 8550U. Typically, laptops based on these Intel quad core processors would cost more compared to laptops with AMD Ryzen 7 3700U processor.
|Average CPU Mark||Single Thread||Cross Platform|
|AMD Ryzen 7 3700U||7315||2062||10310|
|Intel Core i7-10510U||7248||2473||13147|
|Intel Core i7-8665U||6909||2427||12332|
|Intel Core i7-8565U||6663||2332||12327|
|Intel Core i7-8550U||5990||2124||11197|
We chart the performance between the processors for an easier comparison.
- AMD Ryzen 7-3700U (2.3 GHz base clock up to 4 GHz max boost clock 6 MB cache 4 cores)
- TDP Up/Down/Typical: 35/12/15W
You will find that the AMD Ryzen 7 3700U processor performs equally well if not better based on real world benchmarks submitted by users. Consider the Average CPU Mark figures between the processors.
Radeon Vega Mobile Graphics: Radeon RX Vega 10
But, AMD Ryzen 7 has another advantage over Intel Core i7 processors. The Radeon Vega Mobile Graphics, in this case, the Radeon RX Vega 10. The onboard GPU may not be as fast as dedicated mobile graphics GPU but when compared to embedded Intel UHD Graphics 620, it is up to twice as fast in most benchmarks i.e. 3DMark in various games, 3DMark 11 and GFX Bench.
As a result, laptops based on AMD Ryzen 7 3700U are sometimes packaged as a mobile gaming laptop. It will meet the demands of the occassional and even casual gamers with its 5th generation integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics. Promising smooth gameplay with sufficiently high frame rates when playing games like Fornite or League of Legends on lower settings.
As an example, the HP Pavilion 15 Gaming Laptop above can achieve over 110 fps on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at Full HD 1080p resolution and 45 fps at Ultra 1440p resolution. It will even support ray tracing in Battlefield 5 with a score of over 42 fps at 1080p and 22 fps at 1440p. Without ray tracing enabled, those figures go up to 83 fps and 41 fps respectively. Wicher 3 scores are 91 fps at 1080p and 32 fps at 1440p resolution while Apex Legends scores are higer, 94 fps at 1080p and 51 fps at 1440p. Finally, when playing Fortnite, you can expect over 146 fps at 1080p or 43 fps at 1440p resolution.
We would class laptops with AMD Ryzen 7 3700U processor as enthusiast class gaming machines. Not too serious and certainly not up there with Pro level gaming machines.

Hi, I have been browsing a lot to try and understand this. Was hoping you would help me. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700U has 8 cores. Yet everyone is calling it quad core. I understand the AMD 3750H is a quad core being used in other laptops. And even the stats and comparison of the Ryzen 7 3700U is that of the octa core. Could someone please clarify this for me. The same laptop is described as one with a Ryzen 7 quad core on Flipkart while Amazon mentions the 3700U but doesn’t mention the number of cores. It’s extremely unclear and confusing. Would appreciate any coherent answers. Thanks.
